Seasonal Conservation Easement Stewardship Monitor - Boulder County

Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department is seeking to hire 2 Seasonal Conservation Easement Stewardship Monitors. The Conservation Easement Program is housed in the Real Estate Division in the Parks & Open Space Department and is charged with stewarding more than 850 private properties in Boulder County and the surrounding area. These private properties have been protected with conservation easements, which are legal agreements that restrict how the land can be used and developed to protect important conservation values such as natural habitats, agricultural land, and scenic open space. The Conservation Easement Stewardship Monitor seasonal position will focus on stewarding approximately 150 of the county’s conservation easement properties in 6 months. This entails preparing for site visits to assigned properties by reviewing files, downloading data for navigation in the field, contacting landowners to schedule visits, and driving to the properties in a county vehicle. The site visit consists of walking or hiking properties with landowners, identifying issues and opportunities for improving conservation values on the property, connecting the landowner with resources to help manage their land and checking for compliance with the terms of the conservation easement. Subsequent tasks consist of writing monitoring reports that summarize findings, creating maps in ArcGIS Pro, compiling photos, updating the stewardship monitoring files, and following up with landowners as needed.

This 6-month seasonal position would be a good fit for someone who enjoys interacting with and helping people, is comfortable exploring the outdoors, and is looking to grow their experience with natural resource management and land conservation. The ideal applicant will have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, will be comfortable with outreach and holding conversations with people from various backgrounds, and will be able to present themselves diplomatically in easy or difficult conversations. This candidate will have an interest in learning to read and research real estate documents with the goals of explaining them to landowners. This position is based out of the Conservation Easement Program and is supervised by the Conservation Easement Program Supervisor of the Parks & Open Space Department. They also work closely with other departmental staff. The desired start date is between late March and mid-April.

This is an hourly, non-benefited position that will work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position will work out of 5201 St. Vrain Road, Longmont, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
